SAN MATEO, ARAGON TRACK-CARING, RESPECT
Here is a sportsmanship story from last Thursday's Aragon - San Mateo Track meet. It involved two athletes James Garcia of Aragon and Larry Campbell of San Mateo in the 300m Hurdle race.
Approaching the final hurdle Garcia was leading but hit his final hurdle causing him to take a nasty fall. Campbell passed the fallen Garcia to win the race. Immediately after crossing the finish line he turned to Garcia who had gotten up to finish. Campbell came over to ask if he was OK.
Next Garcia was taken over to a bench to assess his injuries which included two badly bruised knees and a possible broken finger. Garcia was given an ice bag for a knee. While was sitting there Campbell came to the bench after having gotten an ice bag for himself. He had stretched his hamstring early in the race. Rather than using it himself he proceed to use it by putting and holding it on the other knee of Garcia so both knees were being treated.
What a nice gesture by the young man from San Mateo High.
Great sportsmanship. Larry Campbell, his parents and the San Mateo coach are to be complimented.

An important friend of high school sports passed away on March 14.
John E. Spalding was the initiator and major contributor to the CCS History Section of our web site, as well as the prestigious
CCS Alumni Section recognizing outstanding CCS Alumni. John was an avid basketball fan and was a fixture, quietly sitting in thousands of high school gyms every season observing and enjoying the efforts of the players on the court.
John Spalding and his wife Barbara were also personal contributors to the CCS Scholarship Program for graduating Seniors.
John's presence among us will be missed, as he loved high school sports, the students and coaches involved and was willing and enthusiastic about supporting the endeavors of those coaches and student-athletes with his time and talents and always with a quiet smile on his face.
Our deepest sympathies go to his family in this terrible loss of a wonderful man with whom we, in the CCS office, were privileged to work and whom we admired with real affection. We will miss you John!
