The Central Coast Section girls basketball tournament was inaugurated in 1977.
Through the years,
the format has varied and with it the number of teams competing -- ranging from 14 the
first year
to 76 in 1988, the first year of five-division play. In the earlier years, the leagues
were assigned to geographical regions and regional championships were held before the
sectional championship.
Three teams -- Sacred Heart Prep in 1993 and 1994 and Mitty in 1999 -- finished the
season
undefeated. The Sacred Heart team won the state Division V title in 1993 and the Division
I title
in 1994. Mitty won the Division I title in 1999.
Pinewood holds the team scoring record with 110 scored against Fremont Christian in
1998.
Other high scoring games included 107 by Monterey against Mercy of San Francisco in 1990,
104 by Sacred Heart Prep against St. Lawrence in 1997 and 100 by Mitty against Mt.
Pleasant
in 1999.
