1968
The champions of 11 leagues made up the field for the first Central Coast Section basketball
championship playoffs. The teams were divided into four regions.

After a lethargic first half, Fremont started rolling in the second half and built up leads of as
much as eight points. The Cards could get no closer than four points. Fremont’s "Big Three"
divided the scoring with Mike Tarabonovic and Mark Wright each hitting 14 and Greg Mobley
added 12.

Relying on its pressure defense and balanced scoring, Willow Glen won its 27th game of the
season without defeat. The Rams led by as much as 16 points and cruised to the easy win as
Santa Cruz was runner-up for the second straight year.

With Randy Johnson and Steve Bartkowski sharing individual honors, Buchser romped to an
easy victory. Bartkowski hit 25 and Johnson 22. After holding a two-point first quarter edge,
the Bruins outscored the Trojans, 43-28, in the next two periods.

Alisal’s Bob Higgins hit six free throws and a field goal in the final six minutes to produce the
Trojan win. Mitty held a 50-47 lead midway through the final stanza when Higgins went to work.
Rick Hile of Mitty took scoring honors, however, with 18.

Two changes were made for the fifth annual tournament. The Christian Schools League champion
was added so 12 leagues were participating and the regional championships were held as part of a
two-night doubleheader rather than being played at four sites. Once-defeated Alisal and Sacred Heart
(with four defeats) were the co-favorites.

Forcing four quick turnovers, Sacred Heart jumped ahead, 8-0, and then romped to a 20-8 lead
after one quarter. Although Alisal fought back, it couldn’t over-come the early surge and was able
to pull only to within seven points. Glenn Hubbard scored 24 for the Irish.

Riordan scored 10 unanswered points at the end of the second quarter to take a 12-point halftime

lead and made it stand up for the Crusaders’ second straight CCS title. Elmer Love, Alton Byrd
and Greg Bond were the standouts for Riordan.

After the creation of the Fremont League (forerunner of the De Anza League), 13 league
champions took part in the playoffs. St. Ignatius, rated No. 1 the entire season, was the favorite

Kurt Rambis, the tourney’s most valuable player, tipped in a missed free throw with 1:01 left in the game to give the Pioneers the
win. The largest crowd to date in tournament history (6,452) saw Cupertino overcome a five-point deficit in the final four minutes. Rambis, despite being double-teamed, scored 23 points.

The Pioneers beat the Wildcats for the second straight year in the finals. Kurt Rambis led the Cupertino charge with 27 points, 10 in the third period when the victors went ahead to stay after trailing at intermission. Wildcat ace Bill O’Neill hit 14 in the first half but was held scoreless in the final two periods.

The creation of the Santa Cruz Coast League boosted the number of entrants in the playoffs back to 13. Del Mar, the season-long leader in the rankings, was the favorite. The Fremont League had been renamed the De Anza League.

Despite a 25-point performance by Mark McNamara, Monta Vista’s tenacious defensive play and shot selection paid off. The Matadors took a 28-26 lead early in the third quarter and made it stand up. Haakon Austefjord led the winners with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Raider center Mike Baldwin blocked Haakon Austefjord’s shot with four seconds left in the second overtime to preserve the win. The teams were tied 41-41 after the first overtime, but Raider Greg Woodard hit a jumper and a free throw and Damon Jenkins added a free throw in the final stanza to offset free throws by Matt Mattison and Brett Walberg of Monta Vista. The Matadors tried to work the ball to Austefjord for an equalizing score, but Baldwin blocked the shot to end the thriller. Melvin Holland of Silver Creek led scorers with 24.

Pat Rodgers hit two free throws with 1:32 left in the game and St. Francis held on for the win. The winning Lancers missed four one-and-one free throw chances in the final 69 seconds, but Fremont could not capitalize. Fremont led, 36-31, after three quarters but couldn’t maintain the advantage. Rodgers led the scorers with 20.

A new format that involved 26 teams -- champions and runnersup from each of the 13 leagues -- eliminated the regional concept that had been in force for the first 12 years. Six teams were seeded and drew first round byes. The quarterfinals were held as doubleheaders at the same site on successive nights. Mt. Pleasant and Gunn were slight co-favorites.

However, Jeff’s Jay Williams hit both ends of a one-and-one to give the Indians a four-point lead.

Hendrickson scored 19 points and Siwek added 17. Reis pulled down 21 rebounds and added 13 points. Walter Watts of Independence took game honors with 20 points. Monta Vista led, 32-19, at halftime and although Independence made several runs in the third quarter, the 76ers could not cut the margin substantially.

The Crusaders got their revenge for a loss to the Lancers in the 1988 CCS Division I final. 
Ray Kelly, a 5-9 guard, scored a game-high 23 points and had nine assists, five rebounds 
and three steals. St. Francis played without its 6-8 center, Shanan Rosenberg, who was 
sidelined with a back problem.

Menlo-Atherton used its quickness and a tight man-to-man defense to defeat taller 
and slower Cupertino. The Bears took their biggest lead, 50-34, at the end of the third 
quarter, but Cupertino, behind the scoring of Bret Thorp and Matt Romig, rallied to 
close its deficit to 55-50 with three minutes remaining. Menlo-Atherton again took 
charge, scoring six of the next seven points to put the game out of reach.

The winners used a solid defense that held Bellarmine to nine points in the first half 
to propel the Wildcats romped to its third CCS title -- but the first since 1984. The 
Bells scored only five points in the third quarter and were out of the game, 38-14, 
at that point. St. Ignatius, led in scoring by Luke Whitehead with 25, wasn’t shooting 
well but the defense turned Bellarmine away time and time again.

Senque Carey was the scoring leader as usual with 18 points, Chase Lyman had 11 and 
Matt Maguire 9. The winners held a comfortable edge until the final quarter when 
Woodside made a run but could not overtake the Lancers.

Riordan won the battle of underdogs with a furious third-quarter rally and then continued to 
pull away in the final stanza. The seventh-seeded Crusaders, who finished the regular season

15 rebounds. Capuchino, which was seeded eighth, led 20-19 at halftime but could not keep 
pace with the winners.

The Bells exacted some revenge while defeating the No. 1 ranked team in the state. St. Ignatius had not only beaten Bellarmine in the 1998 finals, but turned them back three times during the regular season. Forward Jeb Ivey was the difference, riddling the zone defense for 21 points and almost single-handedly stopping St. Ignatius’ offense by pushing star Luke Whitehead outside his comfort shooting zone. The game was close until late in the third quarter when Bellarmine went on a 7-0 run.

North Salinas’ pressure frustrated the Lancers so much that the latter used their final time out in the third quarter.

Riordan’s defense again was the key as San Mateo’s Cardell Butler, who was averaging 34.4 points a game in the tournament, to 12 points. The game was decided in the early minutes of the third quarter when the Crusaders went on an 8-0 run after being down 24-23. Every time San Mateo would cut the deficit, Riordan surged ahead again.
